Participation rate in the Legal Amazon’s labor market is low

The participation rate of young people in the labor market is much lower in the Legal Amazon than in the rest of Brazil.

According to data from the quarterly Continuous National Household Sample Survey (IBGE), we can observe that between 2012 and 2020 the brazilian participation rate of people of working age (aged 15 years or older) was ascending. Meanwhile, in the Legal Amazon, this rate had a sharp drop starting in the second quarter of 2016. The situation is particularly serious among people aged between 18 and 24. In 2019, only 58% of young people were either employed or searching for work in the region. In the rest of Brazil, this percentage was around 72%, which corresponds to a 14 percentage points difference. In the visualization bellow, these and other pieces of evidence from the Legal Amazon’s labor market can be explored.

The displayed data have been compiled from various sources through the datazoom.amazonia package in R.
