Neither-nor generation: an alarming phenomenon in the Legal Amazon

The percentage of people between 18 and 24 who neither work nor study in the Legal Amazon is greater than in the rest of Brazil.

In Brazil, the Coronavirus pandemic has drastically reduced the occupancy rate of young people aged 18 to 24 both in the Legal Amazon and outside of it. However, young workers in the Legal Amazon have always faced greater difficulties in inserting themselves in the labor market when compared to the ones in the rest of the country. As a result, the proportion of people who neither work nor study (neither-nor) has always been always higher in the Legal Amazon than in the rest of Brazil. Moreover, this proportion is gradually increasing. The consequence is a waste of the region’s potential income generation, investment and savings, as its population is younger than the rest of country’s.
